Growing up in an affluent Los Angeles family, Kim received a car for her sixteenth birthday. Unlike her friends, however, Kim found herself cut off by her parents at age eighteen, as they wanted to instill a work ethic in their daughter.

From 2000 to 2004, before Kim hit the “Hollywood scene,” she was married to Damon Thomas, an R&B producer. Since Kim got involved in Hollywood she has been linked to Nick Lachey, Ray J, Nick Cannon, The Game, Damon Thomas and Jeremy Ferrer.

Kim was one of Paris Hilton's party pals and was little known outside gossip circles until she announced in early 2007 that she was taking legal action to prevent the distribution of a naughty home video she had made with then-boyfriend Ray J. It follows her and her family's daily exploits and is one of the highest rated reality shows on the air.
Kim has appeared in various other TV shows. She had a minor role in the episode entitled "Benefits" on the show How I Met Your Mother. On the CBS show, CSI:NY, Kim played a murder suspect with another actress, Vanessa Minnillo.
